Meet our new Counselor and Special Educational Needs Coordinator, Melena Slaven! Ms. Slaven is from the United States, but has been living abroad for almost 15 years. For the past four years she has been living and working in Beijing, China where she is a mental health counselor for a local NGO. She also teaches English and psychology. Before Beijing she lived in Seoul, South Korea and on the pacific islands of Tinian, Saipan, and Guam.
Ms. Slaven is a board certified mental health counselor (NCC) and certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC). NCCs have voluntarily met high national standards for the practice of counseling. They are competent in skills such as human growth and development, social and cultural foundations, helping relationships, group counseling, career counseling, assessment, research and program evaluation, and professional counseling.
The CRC is the premier credential designed specifically for rehabilitation counselors and have advanced education and work experience specific to serving individuals with disabilities. Ms. Slaven loves to travel and meet new people. She has friends from all over the world! She has a positive and fun attitude! She is extremely excited to start her role at ILG and can’t wait to meet you all!
